Lockheed Martin last week announced the debut of a division integrating its various energy-related operations into a single unit.

The new Lockheed Martin Energy will be organized under the company's Missiles and Fire Control business. It will be based near Dallas and employ nearly 1,000 workers worldwide. The transition from other Lockheed businesses began last summer.

Company officials said that the new division would offer comprehensive solutions in energy transmission and storage, along with developments in nuclear, bio-based and ocean energy.

Lockheed will also apply advanced cybersecurity systems from its defense and intelligence businesses to the energy unit. The company is the nation's largest defense contractor.

Frank Armijo, who previously worked in several company leadership roles, will lead the division. He told the Washington Business Journal that renewable energy would create increasing demand for new energy capacity.

“We see energy as a global security and economic imperative,” Armijo said.

Lockheed Martin Energy on Tuesday also announced a $43 million contract to develop a waste-to-energy plant in Germany. The Business Journal reported that the unit secured $150 million in new business since January.
